Education for Sustainability

Schools and educators play a vital role in inspiring and creating a healthy, secure and sustainable future for all

Now more than ever, we need to reconnect students with the larger purpose of education in the larger living world and to honour them with transformative learning experiences that prepare them to participate in and to lead with us the shift toward a sustainable future.

In partnership with the Cloud Institute for Sustainability Education, we offer Education for Sustainability (EfS) capacity-building programmes encompassing:

Structure of programme

The EfS programme is offered at 2 levels:

1 full day or 2 half days

This session is meant to develop participants’ awareness, knowledge and enduring understanding of core concepts, content and habits of mind that characterise Education for Sustainability. There will be systems thinking games and experiential simulations, small group discussions, stories and case studies to support participants’ learning and help envision what is possible when we educate for sustainability.

5 full days

This is a practical, hands-on session where educators and curriculum designers get to innovate, prototype, build and map curriculum and assessments designed to meet EfS standards and performance indicators — all without additional class time or add-ons. There will be guided working sessions, learning circles, peer review and personalised coaching.

Appreciative Inquiry Practitioner Programme

Human systems grow in the direction of questions we most frequently ask ourselves

In its broadest focus, Appreciative Inquiry (AI) involves the systematic discovery of what gives “life” to a living system when it is most alive, most effective, and most capable in economic, ecological, and human terms.  At the heart of AI is the art and practice of asking questions that strengthen a system’s capacity to understand, anticipate, and heighten positive potential.

Guided by the Principles of Appreciative Inquiry, the process typically involves the 4-D stages with an affirmative topic as the focal point.

Comprising both coursework and fieldwork, this programme provides in-depth and hands-on training to apply AI methodologies at the interpersonal, organisational and ecosystem levels. Those who will benefit most are:

  • Organisation Development Practitioners facilitating transformation efforts
  • Leaders keen to learn about strengths-based change
  • Internal Facilitators and Coaches keen to frame and design inquiry that transforms

Structure of programme

Participants who complete the following 3 parts of the programme to receive a certificate jointly issued by the David Cooperrider Center for Appreciative Inquiry and the Sequoia Group

Art of Hosting & Participatory Leadership

Art of Hosting was born out of the need to relook at the way human beings connect with each other and approach complex problems.

We help organisations develop empathic sensibilities in its people in order to deliver innovative and impactful solutions. We facilitate creative and collaborative processes that challenge organisations’ assumptions about the world they exist in and the world they desire to create.

Using design thinking methods and tools, organisations learn how to explore, experiment, co-create strategies that help them compete in new ways, create new economic value and deliver customer delight.

  • Enable open and meaningful conversations
  • Maximise collective wisdom
  • Invite diverse viewpoints
  • Transform conflict into cooperation

These processes hinge on a fourfold practice of being present (pre-sensing), engaging in conversations (participating), hosting conversations (contributing) and becoming a community of practice (co-creating).

Structure of programme

Conducted as a 3-day experiential learning programme, it covers the principles of:

Process Design

Chaordic Stepping Stones

Dialogic Engagement Methods

Harvesting & Visual Recording

Mindful Self-Compassion Course

Wellbeing is foundational to living well and creating lasting positive impact in our work

Most of us feel compassion for our close friends when they are struggling. What would it be like to receive the same caring attention from yourself when you need it most? All that's required is a shift in attention - recognising that you too are worthy of compassion.

Sequoia partners with mindfulness practitioners to offer this course on the skills of mindfulness and developing the resource of self-compassion for emotional wellbeing.

Structure of programme

Once a week for 2 months, sessions run for 1.5 hours each, covering the following objectives:

  • Articulate the basic theoretical underpinnings and research findings related to self-compassion
  • Develop self-compassion practices to motivate themselves with encouragement rather than self-criticism
  • Develop the capacity to contend with challenges through awareness of common humanity
  • Apply core self-compassion practices in daily life
