Our Story
We draw on our founding story and metaphor from the Sequoia forest – a symbol of an ecosystem that is adaptive and generative – one that is anchored by a strong foundation of roots that stands the test of time.
The Giant Sequoia, one of Earth’s longest-living organisms with a lifespan of up to 3,000 years, towers as high as a 27-storey building and spans 35 feet at its base. Yet, despite its massive stature, its roots reach only about 1.5 meters deep. Their strength lies in connection—these roots stretch outward, intertwining with one another to form a vast, supportive network beneath the surface.
Moreover, they are also capable of forming root grafts with neighboring trees, allowing them to share resources such as water and nutrients for trees to grow more efficiently and better withstand environmental stresses.
After the mother Sequoia dies, her roots continue to live underground and provide a source of sustenance to the ring of baby Sequoias growing around her. The young trees continue to depend on the mother tree for support and nourishment through its taproot long after her own glory is over.
This prompts us to ask, what kind of legacy do we leave behind in the organisations we serve? Do our trails continue to provide support for others? Have the people we left behind, in Robert Greenleaf’s words, “become healthier, wiser, and freer, and more autonomous” because we were there with them before? Perhaps Nature is also gently reminding us that we’re never too big to reach out, ask for help and depend on one another for growth.

SI conducts rigorous research on organizational development methodologies and develops cutting-edge diagnostic tools like OCTAVE. We bridge academic knowledge with practical application to create lasting positive impact through evidence-based scholarship and innovative learning experiences, and communities of OD practitioners.
